Hedges, walls and fences. An isolated world. Images that lay open a desire for privacy and distance, images of borders. The viewer is not invited to look in on what lies beyond the walls. In his work “FRONT”, Linus Muellerschoen journeyed through the suburbs of Berlin and compared them to those of his childhood in California, where doors were never locked and the front yard was more of an exhibition space than a private one. He discovers the defining power that a clear border can have, the statements that they make about those that create them. The flat, collage-like photographs bespeak of a poetry of concealment, of shyness, but also an intense respect of private space.
